Raise awareness to the maximum, like a 12-ton elephant - and celebrate World Elephant Day!

What's not to love about elephants? They're the largest land mammals living on Earth, which is an enormous achievement (pun intended). They're very smart: they have the biggest brains of any land animal, and an elephant's brain has three times more neurons than a human brain. They show self-awareness, deep empathy, and they actually use tools! Also, they're funny: elephants show clear signs of a playful, lighthearted side that many researchers and animal experts describe as a sense of humor. If that's not a description of an impressive animal, we don't know what is.

In addition, all three living species of elephants are threatened with extinction.

That's why in 2012, over 100 global organizations united to create World Elephant Day. It's an international awareness event celebrated annually on August 12 to protect and preserve African and Asian elephants. It's here to fight poaching, habitat loss, and captive mistreatment of elephants. And as animal lovers, it's our job to be their voice on the matter. Unfortunately, with the situation of the world, the wildlife isn't going to save itself - it's our job to stand up for our animal friends.

We encourage every animal lover who reads this to raise awareness about elephants on this World Elephant Day, and generally about wildlife conservation. See if your local wildlife conservation center looks for volunteers, donate some money if you can spare a little, and share the message with whoever is willing to hear it. And for today?
